After a twelve hour day with several meetings, heavy rain, lots of driving Peter Wooding uttered the now famous Kampala phrase - I need a Banana Split. Not the kind of thing we thought the missions house could muster, but after rummaging through the fridge, he found Ice Cream, sliced up a banana and even had chocolate sauce to add for good measure.... Didn't find any sprinkles though, sometimes life is hard....
Mark Riley had left the Van with us last night. To speed the journey home, Mark went home on a boda boda (Motorbike Taxi), which was fine as it wasn't raining. This morning however Mark had to make the same journey back and the rain here made him look on arrival as though the local fire service had hosed him down for a full half hour.
The day was productive meeting with the Board of An Open Door, a children's home I've been connected with for the last 15 years. I brought the original team to Uganda back in 1996, and from there we ateam of us have done lots of activity inclulding helping to plant churches, lots of small and big scale evangelism, and of course started the care home in Bulange, Kampala, while also supporting a work in Malaba.
It was great to turn up to the staff meeting in the home, on the day they were handing out certificates and prizes for best staff members. It was a small gesture which made the low paid staff who often work long hours, smile.
The recession has hit the income of An Open Door, with around a 30% dip in income, it's been a tough few years, but praise God through tight cost control, we've managed to avoid laying any staff off and the home still runs today.
There's lots of work to continue with, every day something new to deal with or to look to improve and after the visits to other homes, there's plenty of new ideas to implement.
On Monday we're back at the home for a vision day with the management team. One of the items up for discussion is what to do with the piece of land we bought in Kagabba, which we had to suspend development on due to budget restrictions.
Tommorrow, we head off to Mbale for a weekend preaching in Pastor Okumu's church.
